Lone Star Origins The Lone Star Writers Project (LSWP) is sponsored by The International Institute of Literacy Learning (TIILL). We trace our roots to 1965, and the interactive, hands-on writer’s workshops led by Dr. Bill Martin Jr and Dr. Roach Van Allen at Oakland University. Our headquarters moved from New York to Texas in 1984, and we have served teachers and school districts from Maine to California since then—totaling more than 45,000 alumni. Our workshops, conferences and seminars have played a major role in changing writing instruction and restoring the excitement of learning to both teachers and children. Our trainers consist of outstanding classroom teachers and writers who provide first-hand exposure to concepts, craft lessons, and strategies that are revolutionizing writing practices. The LSWP is geared to not only instruct—but to inspire. We believe that the affective domain is crucial to the success of the learning environment. While the LSWP is based on the theoretical base printed below, our sessions are extremely practical, with real-world writing applications that move both teachers and children to success in writing. Writing is inseparable from reading, so we bring an extensive collection of children’s books and professional books for teachers to each training site. When students understand writing from an author’s perspective, they become better readers as well as better writers.
